Annette Hilton has a background in mathematics and science teaching in both middle years and senior secondary schooling. While a teacher and Head of Department, she completed a Masters of Educational Studies in Middle Schooling. Annette’s doctoral work focused on the use of digital technologies and writing to learn frameworks to develop students' conceptual understanding in science. More recently, she has extended this research to focus on the enhancement of numeracy teaching and learning in and beyond mathematics and science classrooms.

Annette is passionate about the development of both pre- and in-service teachers and she has conducted teacher professional development in Australia, Tanzania and Denmark. Annette has previously worked as lecturer and researcher at UQ and ACU (Melbourne) and from 2013 to 2015 as Associate Professor in Science Education at Aarhus University (Copenhagen, Denmark).

Annette’s current research interests include conceptual development in mathematics and science, the use of digital technologies to enhance teaching and learning, teacher professional growth, teachers as practitioner researchers. Her research in this area was recognised in 2013 when she led a team that received the Best Research and Practice Project Award from the European Association for Practitioner Research on Improving Learning.
