Dr Avinash Singh is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and the Australian AI Institute at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia. He is also the Director of the newly established Human Augmentation Lab (HAL), located at UTS Tech Lab. His work focuses on advancing brain–computer interfaces (BCI), neuroadaptive systems, human augmentation, and technologies for enhancing human cognition in real-world settings. Dr Singh’s research sits at the intersection of machine learning, cognitive neuroscience, and mixed reality (eg. Apple Vision Pro), with a particular emphasis on building robust two-way BCI systems that enhance cognition, support decision-making, and improve everyday human–technology interactions.

Dr Singh is actively involved in shaping global conversations around neurotechnology ethics, standards, and research practice through a combination of editorial service and international advisory roles. He serves in editorial positions with leading journals as an Academic Editor for Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio) and PLOS Digital Health, and as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Neuroergonomics. He also serves as Co-Chair of the IEEE Neuroethics Framework for the Workplace, with support from IEEE Brain; is a member of the IEEE Standards Committee on Unifying Brain–Computer Interfaces; contributes as an Expert Advisory Panel member for the Institute of Neurotechnology and Law in the United Kingdom; and works with UNICEF as an Expert Advisor for the Neurotechnology for Children initiative. In recognition of his contributions to BCI research, he received the Google TensorFlow Faculty Award in 2021. He is also engaged in discussions on the future of human enhancement and transhumanism, and is the founder of the India Future Society, a think tank dedicated to exploring emerging technologies and long-term human futures.

Dr Singh completed his PhD in Computer Science at UTS in 2019, with doctoral research conducted in collaboration with the Technical University of Berlin (Germany), the University of California San Diego (USA), and the US Army Research Laboratory. He also holds a Master’s degree in Software Systems from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, completed in 2013.

His current research explores cognitive function modelling, brain dynamics, adaptive human–AI interaction, and next-generation BCI technologies for neuroadaptive systems, cognitive enhancement, and human augmentation.

Selected ongoing projects

• Neuroadaptive BCI applications: Developing systems that support interpersonal communication, reduce confirmation bias through cognitive nudging, and improve interaction in collaborative robotics and spatial learning. These projects are supported by several competitive grants such as Australian Research Concil.
• Sensory Augmentation for blind mobility: Creating technology that enhances fluent mobility and environmental awareness for blind individuals. This work is supported by an NHMRC Ideas Grant.
• The UTSxDream Recording (formerly DreamMachine): Exploring the possibility of reconstructing dream content from neural signals using advanced AI, neuroimaging and computational modelling.
