BIO
Dr Binhua Xu is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Civil, Environmental and Sociotechnical Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Since joining UTS in 2023, he has been contributing to an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project examining the mechanisms of cyclic instability and the long-term performance of soft subgrades supporting transport infrastructure.
Dr Xu received his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from Hohai University in collaboration with the Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (China) in 2022. His research lies at the intersection of fundamental soil mechanics and applied ground improvement engineering, with particular focus on consolidation theory, transport in porous media, soil dynamics, transport geomechanics, and advanced monitoring technologies for infrastructure systems. His work centres on developing rigorous analytical and computational frameworks to predict soft soil behaviour under realistic field conditions. These models incorporate key mechanisms often neglected in conventional design approaches, including nonlinearity, large-strain effects, and time-dependent response. Through this research, he has advanced understanding of cyclic loading–induced instability and potential fluidisation of transport subgrades, providing new tools for evaluating long-term foundation performance. In parallel, he translates mechanistic insights into practical engineering solutions aimed at improving the safety, serviceability, and resilience of infrastructure built on soft ground.
Dr Xu’s contributions have been recognised through international journal publications, patents, and several awards, including the Excellent Paper Award from the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (IACMAG, 2025), the Bright Spark Lecture Award from the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE, 2025), the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (2022), and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI, 2023). He also contributes to the international research community through leadership roles, including Chair of a Mini-Symposium at IACMAG 2025.
