BIO
Distinguished Professor Biswajeet Pradhan is a globally recognised leader in spatial intelligence, Earth observation, and GeoAI-driven multi-hazard risk modelling. He is currently Distinguished Professor at the University of Technology Sydney and Director of the Centre for Advanced Modelling and Geospatial Information Systems (CAMGIS).
His research focuses on developing advanced spatial modelling and GeoAI frameworks to support risk-informed decision-making for environmental systems, infrastructure, and climate resilience. He is widely recognised for pioneering the integration of remote sensing, machine learning, and geospatial analytics to model and predict complex hazard processes, including landslides, debris flows, soil erosion, drought and flash droughts, floods, and earthquake-related impacts.
Professor Pradhan is ranked among the world’s most influential scientists and has been consistently listed as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate. According to global rankings by Stanford University, he has been ranked number one worldwide in GIS and Geomatic Engineering and is also recognised as a leading researcher in landslide science and geospatial modelling. He has also been recognised as the world’s leading researcher in landslide studies and among the top scholars globally in Engineering and Computer Science. In Australia, he has been continuously recognised as a national research leader in Remote Sensing by The Australian’s Research Magazine, the country’s flagship annual ranking of top researchers.
He has published more than 930 scientific papers, including over 770 in SCI/SCIE indexed journals, along with 12 books and more than 70 book chapters. His work has attracted over 95,000 citations, with an H-index exceeding 157, placing him among the most highly cited researchers globally in geospatial engineering.
Professor Pradhan has led and delivered more than 23 major research projects with total funding exceeding AUD 19 million, supported by competitive national and international funding agencies and industry partners, including the Australian Research Council (ARC), Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), government agencies in South Korea, Brunei, Malaysia, and India, as well as industry-funded applied research projects. His work spans satellite-based analytics, high-resolution spatial modelling, and AI-driven decision-support systems for hazard mitigation, environmental monitoring, and risk assessment.
His research has been translated into operational tools and geospatial platforms adopted by government agencies and industry, and has been cited in major international policy frameworks, including those of the European Union and the World Bank—demonstrating significant real-world impact beyond academia.
Professor Pradhan is internationally recognised for his editorial leadership and contributions to the scientific community. He serves as Section Editor for Computers & Geosciences, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Spatial Information Research, and Associate Editor of leading journals including Geoscience Frontiers, Complex & Intelligent Systems, and Machine Learning with Applications. He also serves as Managing Editor of Ingegneria Sismica, Topic Editor for Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, and Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Remote Sensing (Data Fusion and Assimilation). In addition, he leads the Springer book series GIScience and Geo-environmental Modelling and Series Editor - AI for Earth: Advances in Geosciences and Environmental Sciences; and serves on the editorial boards of journals such as Landslides and Geosciences.
He also serves as a reviewer and assessor for major international funding agencies and research councils, including the Australian Research Council, the European Science Foundation, UK Research Councils, and the Swiss National Science Foundation, reflecting his global standing and trust in evaluating high-impact research.
Professor Pradhan is the recipient of numerous international honours, including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellowship, and served as Ambassador Scientist for the Foundation from 2015 to 2022. He was also appointed World Class Professor by the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (2018–2020). In total, he has received more than 55 awards recognising excellence in research, teaching, and leadership.
He has supervised more than 50 PhD students and over 40 master’s students, many of whom now hold leading positions in academia, government, and industry worldwide. He maintains an extensive international research network across Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, and has delivered keynote and invited lectures in more than 50 countries.
