BIO
Buddhima Indraratna is a world authority on the application of fundamental and applied geotechnical research to the development of transportation infrastructure. As the Director of UTS Transport Research Centre, he is passionate about training young engineers to become masters of railroad design and construction. He is a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), winner of 6th International Civil Engineer Award in 2023 (c/o Jose Entrecanales Ibarra Foundation and ACCIONA, Madrid, Spain), 2024 Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year (c/o Institution of Engineers Australia), Sir Visveswaraya Prize from ICE (UK) in 2023 for Outstanding Contribution to Civil Engineering, winner of 2025 Thomas Keefer Medal and Donald Stanley Award from the Canadian Civil Engineering Society, and multiple times winning best paper awards through Institution of Civil Engineers, ICE (UK), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS).
Buddhima’s research interests include transportation geomechanics, soft soil engineering, ground improvement, jointed rock engineering, and dams and embankment engineering. He has consistently led numerous research projects worth > AUD 30 million in the past 2 decades, and founded the Australian Research Council’s Industrial Transformation Training Centre, ITTC-Rail as its inaugural Director in 2018.
A consultant to various geotechnical and rail organisations around the world, he is also among the most highly cited researchers internationally (H-Index @ 101; Citations @ 38,000). He has published over 1100 papers, including 14 books and over 530 journal papers, and has delivered over 90 invited keynote papers on all continents. To date, he has supervised over 120 Higher Degree Research students (over 90 PhDs) and over 40 postdoctoral fellows.
A Distinguished Professor at UTS, Buddhima’s pioneering contributions to geotechnical and railway engineering have been acknowledged through numerous national and international accolades, including the 1st Ralph Proctor Lecture and the 4th Louis Menard Lecture of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), and the pinnacle individual award for outstanding contributions to railways from the combined Engineers Australia and Railway Technical Society of Australia (RTSA), which he received at NSW Parliament House in 2015.
His outstanding contributions to Australian Transport Geotechnics have been recognised by several prestigious awards, including the Business-Higher Education Round Table (BHERT) award hosted by the Australian Commonwealth (2009), and the Engineers Australia Transport Medal (2011). In 2009, he delivered the prestigious EH Davis Memorial Lecture of Australian Geomechanics Society for distinguished contributions to theory and practice of geomechanics.
Internationally, his significant contributions are reflected by many awards, for instance, the Thomas Telford Premium by the UK’s Institution of Civil Engineers (2015), a Robert Quigley Award from the Canadian Geotechnical Society (2012), and the Medal of Excellence for life-time contributions from the International Association of Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (2017). He and co-workers at UTS Transport Research Centre were awarded the prestigious Sir Visveswaraya Award for Most Outstanding Overseas Contribution to Civil Engineering in 2023 by ICE (UK).
Buddhima is a Life Member of the Australian Geomechanics Society, Fellow of the prestigious Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE), Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW (FRSN), as well as a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia (FIEAust), Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (FASCE), and a Fellow of the Geological Society of UK (FGS). He is an Honorary Distinguished Professor of AIT (Thailand), IIT-Guwahati (India), Beijing Jiaotong University and Shanghai University for Science and Technology (China).
He completed his undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering and a MSc degree in Soil Mechanics and Engineering Seismology at the Imperial College, London, and his PhD (Civil-Geotechnical Engineering) at the University of Alberta, Canada.
