Dr Catherine Freyne is an award-winning historian and producer of multimedia history content. At UTS, she works as Senior Producer at Impact Studios and Centre Manager at the Australian Centre for Public History. Previously, Catherine has worked as Features Producer at ABC Radio National, Historian at the City of Sydney and Curator at the State Library of NSW. For her work in radio, Catherine has received two NSW Premier’s History Awards and the Oral History Australia Media Award. In 2024, Catherine completed her PhD under the supervision of Professor Anna Clark, with a project combining history, sexuality studies and family memoir. Her thesis 'The Family As Closet: "Gay married men", their wives and their children in Sydney, 1970-2000' won the 2024 UTS FASS HDR Thesis Award. As an undergraduate, Catherine studied Australian history at UNSW earning First Class Honours for a study of non-Indigenous anxiety about belonging in Australia, titled 'Terra Alterius: Belonging, dispossession and reconciliation in contemporary Australian cultural production'. Catherine likes the poet Muriel Rukeyser’s notion that ‘the universe is made up of stories not atoms’ and has a particular penchant for the true ones. She loves birds, underdogs and primary sources.
