FUNDED RESEARCH

Dr Poulton's research focus is on the physics and modelling of advanced nanophotonic materials and devices. His area of expertise is in the numerical and analytical modeling of confined states, waveguides, and waves in complex sturctures such as metsurfaces and metamaterials. One of his central research interests is on the interaction between sounds and light in nanophotonics, via a nonlinear phenomenon known as Brillouin scattering. In the past five years he has focussed on analytical and numerical work that is needed to understand photon-phonon interactions in the multi-scaled, high index-contrast structures used in modern photonics experiments. His expertise encompasses both classical and quantum mechanics, as well as electromagnetic theory, continuum mechanics and optics, in addition to advanced numerical methods and high-performance computing.
