BIO

Prof. Craig D. Longman leads the Legal Strategies Hub and is a Professor of Practice at Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research, Research Unit at UTS. He is also a Barrister at Black Chambers in Sydney.

Craig has worked extensively in Criminal and Civil Litigation, including in high-profile Human Rights matters such as the defence of Palm Island man Lex Wotton to charges arising from the events on Palm Island in 2004, the Bowraville Murders, the defence of Gary Jubelin, Black Lives Matter matters and First Nation death in custody inquiries. He also has written extensively in policy and academic settings on First Nation justice issues.

Joining Jumbunna in October 2010, Craig has established a legal clinic that deploys Strategic Lawyering methodologies in collaboration with First Nation communities to strategically engage with the Australian legal system to seek just outcomes for individuals and communities. The Clinic focuses upon training Australian lawyers to work more professionally and effectively for First Nation communities. To facilitate that aim, in 2017 Craig established the first subject in Australia focused on teaching the use of Strategic/Movement Lawyering approaches in the context of First Nations justice.

In 2023, Craig was short-listed as Legal Academic of the Year in the Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards.

His research interests include Indigenous Justice, Climate Justice and Ethics and Professionalism in the legal profession.
