DrDanial Jahed Armaghani

Dr Danial Jahed Armaghani is a Research Fellow in the School of Civil, Environmental and Sociotechnical Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He holds a PhD and a Master of Engineering in Civil Geotechnics from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, where he received the Chancellor’s Award and Best Student Award for his doctoral achievements. His previous academic appointments include Senior Lecturer at the University of Malaya and Postdoctoral Researcher at Amirkabir University of Technology.

His research focuses on tunnelling, rock mechanics, foundation engineering, and the environmental impacts of blasting. He specialises in integrating artificial intelligence, numerical modelling, and optimisation algorithms to predict engineering performance, assess geotechnical risks, and support decision-making under complex ground conditions. His recent work includes physics-informed and empirical-driven machine learning approaches that connect engineering knowledge with advanced predictive methods.

Dr Armaghani has authored approximately 400 publications and has been recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists from 2020 to 2025. He was also recognised by The Australian’s Research Magazine 2026 as a Research Leader in Environmental and Geological Engineering. He contributes to postgraduate supervision and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. His academic expertise is complemented by industry experience as a Geotechnical Engineer at Geofirst, where he undertook geotechnical design, site investigations, and technical assessments.
