BIO

Professor Debra Jackson AO is a globally recognised nursing leader, academic, and author, known for her commitment to health equity and social justice. From 2021 she has been a UTS Emeritus Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. She holds the position of Professor of Nursing at the Susan Wakil School of Nursing, University of Sydney, where she leads research programs in patient safety with a focus on pressure injury, medication errors, and primary care. 

Professor Jackson is a Fellow of the Australian College of Nursing, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), and a Fellow Ad Eundem of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. In 2019, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to medical education. In 2016, she was named a Principal Fellow of the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, recognising her outstanding and sustained contributions to translational clinical research. In 2021 she was admitted to the Sigma Nursing Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame, and in 2025 was awarded a highly prestigious Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing (UK).

She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Xi Omicron), the International Learning Collaborative, and a Key Researcher at the Ngangk Yira Research Centre for Aboriginal Health & Social Equity at Murdoch University. She also holds Visiting and Adjunct Professorships at several international institutions, including:

  • The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, King’s College London
  • Bournemouth University (UK)
  • Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand)

She is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Advanced Nursing, and previously served on the editorial team of the Journal of Clinical Nursing for 14 years. She also sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Child Health Care, Nursing Inquiry, and Nursing and Health Science.
