Derick Luong is a Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Technology Sydney and is an award-winning teacher specialising in criminal and media law. He teaches a range of law subjects - including the core Priestley 11 subjects, Criminal Law and Procedure and Foundations of Law, within the LLB, JD, and MLS programs at UTS. Derick has also delivered guest lectures in Constitutional Law, Tort Law, and Media Law, and has been invited to teach at the University of Oxford, the University of Sydney, and the University of New South Wales. 

Prior to joining the Faculty, Derick practised as a solicitor at Australian law firm MinterEllison in dispute resolution and specialised in litigation related to defamation, commercial disputes, and class actions. His experience encompasses a wide range of complex and high-profile matters in defamation, corporations law, equity and trusts, and insolvency. Derick's work as a legal practitioner has been recognised through a number of industry awards, such as the 30 Under 30 Law awards and the Financial Times awards. 

Derick's teaching, research, and practice focus on the intersection of media freedom, defamation, and national security. He has written on comparative criminal and constitutional law and democracy, including work on freedom of expression, defamation, press freedom, and national security. He regularly makes submissions on media and criminal law matters. 

Derick obtained his qualifications from the University of Oxford, UNSW, and UTS. He is admitted to practice in New South Wales. In 2024, Derick was named Academic of the Year finalist by the Australian Law Awards and was the recipient of the Faculty of Law's Daniel Tirado Excellence in Teaching Award. Derick is also an Editor and a member of the editorial board of the Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal (OUCLJ).
