Dr Doan Hoang is a Professor in the School of Electrical and Dara Engineering (SEDE), Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He has been a Research Associate and UTS Principal Investigator at the Open Networking Foundation (ONF https://opennetworking.org/technical-communities/groups/research-associates/doan-hoan/ ) and a member of the IoTA (IoT Alliance Australia) Cybersecurity and Network Resilience Workstream.
Professor Doan Hoang received his Bachelor (Honours I) and his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Before UTS, he was with Basser Department of Computer Science, University of Sydney. He held various visiting positions: Visiting Professorships at the University of California, Berkeley; Nortel Networks Technology Centre in Santa Clara, USA; the University of Waterloo, Canada; Carlos III University of Madrid, Spain; and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; Lund University, Sweden; and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), S. Korea.
His research has been on software-defined infrastructures (Software-Define Networks (SDN), Cloud, and Internet of Things (IoT) and on cybersecurity. His research projects focus on optimising resources in Cloud and 5G environments, developing software-defined architectures and protocols for provisioning IoT applications on demand, defining quantitative security metrics and exploring trust assessment models.
His continuing interest is on establishing infrastructure and mechanisms for real-time accessing, distribution of assistive healthcare data. He is also into establishing IT social and service models for engaging aging population.
His current investigation concentrates on Applied Medical Research using Deep Learning methods, especially in predicting drug response of tumours for precision medicine.
Professor Hoang has published over 240 research papers. Many research students have graduated under his supervision (21 PhDs and 11 Masters). Currently he is available for research supervision (PhD, Masters research, and Capstone) in AI/deep learning for applied medical research, cybersecurity, and smart critical infrastructures.
His research has been supported by prestigious national competitive grants including 6 Australian Research Council Grants: ARC Discovery grants (4 ARC-DPs), ARC Industry Linkage Grants (1 ARC-LP), and ARC Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities grants (ARC LIEF). He was involved in a number of industry-sponsored projects: While at UC Berkeley and Nortel Networks, he participated and led several DARPA-sponsored projects including Openet, Active and Programmable Networks, DWD-RAM: A Data-Intensive Service-on-Demand Enabled by Next Generation Dynamic Optical Networks.
His industrial experiences include: Senior architect, Nortel Networks USA; Voice and Data communications manager on Research and Development Department, Telecommunications Division, Fujitsu Australia Limited; Radio communications engineer, Telecom Australia.
