BIO

Dr Don Carter is committed to the provision of quality education for our young people and in particular, the development and implementation of effective writing pedagogies for school students.

An associate professor in the UTS School of International Studies and Education, he specialises in working with teachers to investigate innovative writing pedagogies to improve student performance and outcomes not only in English, but across the curriculum.

Don is able to draw on his work in schools not only as a researcher but also from his experiences as an classroom English teacher, head of department and as an ESL consultant with primary and secondary schools in south western Sydney as well as English Inspector at the NSW Educational Standards Authority.

Don’s research and publications span numerous educational issues:

• Teaching writing: developing teachers as writers and as teachers of writing;
• NAPLAN: the effects of standardised testing on teachers, schools and students;
• Spelling: its role and history in the curriculum and how to teach spelling;
• Curriculum: effective curriculum design and curriculum histories.

His impact on education is evident through his role as English Inspector at the NSW Education Standards Authority, where he led the development of the current English K-10 Syllabus which every child in NSW currently studies. He also led the development of the HSC English Studies course for Year 11 and 12 students. In his role as Inspector, Don was responsible for the English curriculum in all NSW schools from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Don is experienced media in interviews, having appeared on ABC News 24 and ABC TV1 on several occasions and has been interviewed on numerous radio programs, including Alan Jones (2GB), ABC News Radio, ABC 702, ABC Regional stations, 2UE, 2SER as well as the Sydney Morning Herald, The Daily Telegraph and education publications. These interviews have covered issues such as ‘decluttering’ the curriculum; NAPLAN; COVID-19 and school closures; changes to HSC English textual study; and the NSW Curriculum Review.

He has published across a wide range of prominent journals about subject English, writing pedagogies and the work of English teachers such as Australian Journal of Language and Literacy, English in Australia, The Australian Journal of Teacher Education and Curriculum Perspectives. Don is also co-author of The English Teacher’s Handbook A-Z (2nd edition) and Imagination, innovation, creativity: Re-visioning English in education.
