Enabling Technologies for Social Distancing: Fundamentals, Concepts, and Solutions
    30 Mar 2022
Given the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and potentially similar ones in the future, we prepare this book, titled “Enabling Technologies for Social Distancing: Fundamentals, Concepts and Solutions” to provide a comprehensive discussion and ideas on how the state-of-the-art technology, e.g., wireless and networking, artificial intelligence (AI), big data can enable, encourage, and even enforce social distancing practice. The book begins with a fundamental background on social distancing including basic concepts, measurements, models, and proposing various practical technology-based social distancing scenarios. We then discuss enabling wireless technologies which are especially effective and can be widely adopted in practice to keep distance, encourage, and enforce social distancing in general. After that, other emerging and related technologies such as machine learning/AI, computer vision, thermal, ultrasound, blockchain, big data, etc., are introduced. These technologies offer various solutions and directions to deal with problems in social distancing, e.g., symptom prediction, detection and monitoring quarantined people, and contact tracing. Finally, we provide open issues and challenges (e.g., privacy-preserving, scheduling, and incentive mechanisms) in implementing social distancing in practice.
