BIO
Dr Eugene Schofield-Georgeson is a Senior Lecturer and Courses Director in the Faculty of Law at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he teaches Australian Constitutional Law and Employment/Labour Law. He is one of Australia's leading scholars of industrial relations and labour law, with a particular focus on the construction industry, including the regulation of the construction union and the drivers of corruption within it. His research examines how state and corporate power is exercised over working people, both historically and today, and draws on over a decade of legal practice experience in criminal and employment law. He is the author of two scholarly monographs: Contract, Labour Law and The Realities of Working Life (Routledge, London, 2025) and By What Authority? Criminal law in colonial New South Wales, 1788–1861 (Australian Scholarly Publishing, 2018), alongside more than 25 peer-reviewed articles in leading Australian and international law journals.
Eugene's scholarship on industrial relations and the construction sector has attracted sustained attention from unions, government and the media. His broader work on labour standards and wage enforcement has been presented to the Australian Council of Trade Unions and the Federal Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, as well as the Japanese Government. His critique (with Professor Joellen Riley) of the High Court's decision in CFMEU v Personnel Contracting addressed a central question in contemporary Australian labour law. He is a regular media commentator on industrial relations, an Academic Panel Member of the Law Society of New South Wales' Expert Accreditation Committee in Employment Law, and Co-Convenor of the UTS Labour and Migration Law Research Cluster.
In addition, Eugene researches possibilities for worker voice, in respect to health, safety and the environment.
