BIO

Fred Moshiri is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and structural engineer with 17 years of professional experience spanning structural engineering, consulting, research, engineering education and project delivery. His expertise covers the analysis, design and assessment of reinforced concrete, steel, timber and masonry structures, together with soil–structure interaction, foundation systems, structural assessment and remediation.

Fred has developed extensive industry experience through senior and principal engineering roles with Australian and multinational Tier 1 and Tier 2 engineering consulting firms, including ACOR Consultants, Calibre, Egis, Tonkin Consulting and Vinculum Advisory. His consulting experience encompasses structural design, independent technical review, structural engineering assessment, project management and technical leadership across complex infrastructure and building projects. This experience has provided him with a strong understanding of the practical requirements of engineering design, constructability, project delivery, client requirements and multidisciplinary coordination within professional consulting environments.

His professional experience covers a broad range of sectors, including water and wastewater infrastructure, bridges and transport infrastructure, commercial and industrial buildings, education and sporting facilities, residential developments, and structural assessment and remediation projects. He currently works as a Principal Structural Engineer, providing technical leadership, design review, structural assessment and engineering advice on complex projects.

Fred holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Bu-Ali Sina University, Iran, a Master of Structural Engineering from Linnaeus University, Sweden, and a PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), completed in 2014 under the supervision of Professor Keith Crews. His PhD research investigated the structural behaviour of timber–concrete composite connections and floors, supported by an industry scholarship from the Structural Timber Innovation Company (STIC).

In 2009–2010, Fred was awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to participate in the MEEES programme in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology, involving the University of Grenoble Joseph Fourier, France, and the Institute for Advanced Study/University of Pavia – ROSE School, Italy.

From 2016 to 2020, Fred was an Honorary Postdoctoral Industry Fellow with the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering at Western Sydney University, where he contributed to applied structural engineering research and maintained strong links between academic research and professional engineering practice.

His teaching and academic interests include structural analysis and design, reinforced concrete, steel and masonry structures, timber and composite structures, soil–structure interaction, foundation systems, structural assessment and remedial engineering. Fred particularly enjoys connecting fundamental engineering principles with practical structural design, construction and engineering problem-solving.

Fred has contributed to engineering education through university teaching and guest lectures, professional training and technical seminars. His combination of academic research, extensive consulting experience and professional engineering practice enables him to bring contemporary industry knowledge, practical design experience and real-world engineering problem-solving into the university learning environment.

Fred has authored and contributed to technical publications and industry guidance and is a member of professional organisations including Engineers Australia and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
