Ginny Stein was appointed Head of Journalism at UTS after a more than thirty year career, most spent overseas as a foreign correspondent. One of the ABC's first digital era video journalists, she was first posted to Bangkok, Thailand where she covered the end of the Khmer Rouge, the overthrow of Indonesia's long-time dictator Suharto, followed by the destruction and emergence of East Timor as the century's newest nation. Joining SBS Dateline, she travelled the world, filming stories in many nation's that were off-limits to foreign media, from Myanmar (Burma) to Zimbabwe. A three time winner of  a Walkley award, Australia's top journalism prize, she was also twice commended for camerawork. She later returned to the ABC to take up the role of Africa correspondent where she filmed stories across the continent, covering conflict in Somalia, Kenya, and South Africa alongside stories of immense courage, survival and ingenuity. In 2019, after completing a Masters in Disaster Resilience and Sustainable Development she moved to Vanuatu to work in the humanitarian sector. When COVID-19 struck, and the island nation closed its borders she stayed put, building a digital first production company and mentoring young content creators. When borders were opened, she returned to journalism as Southeast Asia managing editor for Radio Free Asia in Washington DC. She and her teams were two-times winner of a National Edward R Murrow award for Digital Excellence.
