BIO

Dr Gustavo Espinoza-Vergara is an ARC DECRA Fellow at the Australian Institute for Microbiology & Infection (AIMI), University of Technology Sydney. His research focuses on the mechanisms that underpin bacterial stress responses, with particular interest in how interactions with higher organisms influence pathogen survival, persistence in the environment, and virulence in the host.

 

During his PhD, Dr Espinoza-Vergara undertook advanced training in molecular biology and mouse models at two leading laboratories in the United States. His research work has been recognised with the Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis (UNSW, 2019), a conference award from the American Society for Microbiology (Washington DC), and postgraduate scholarships from UNSW (2016–2017).


Dr Espinoza-Vergara has successfully supervised HDRs to completion and currently supervises PhD and Honours candidates. Since 2014, he has been awarded several prestigious fellowships, including a Doctoral Fellowship (155K, Chile), the AIMI Path Fellowship (250K, 2024), and the highly competitive ARC DECRA Fellowship ($432K, 2024). In addition to securing smaller research grants as Chief Investigator (~$55K), his work contributed significantly to the success of an ARC Discovery Project (DP170100453, $516K). His research has been presented at five international conferences in Vibrio biology and Microbial Ecology.

Dr Espinoza-Vergara made a groundbreaking discovery identifying a novel class of bacterial transmission vectors—protozoan expelled food vacuoles (EFVs)—that enhance pathogen virulence in the host. This work has been recognised by international experts in Vibrio cholerae research and was featured in nine major news stories. In 2021, he was awarded one of Australia’s most prestigious scientific awards: the Eureka Prize for Scientific Research, for his pioneering work on novel vectors of gut infectious agents.
