TEACHING AND SUPERVISION

--Class-based teaching--

Ian was a tutor with the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at UTS for the unit Engineering Communication ('EngCom'). In EngCom, students' work in teams to create an appropriate design solution with a focus on social benefit. Students develop an understanding of the social, cultural, economic and environmental responsibilities of a professional engineer. Project's were based in the context of Cape York Traditional Owners; Vanuatu and East Timor.

--Transformational/immersive learning experiences--

Ian has also led and designed immersive study tours. These include Design Summits in India, Nepal and Cambodia for student engineers. For the Summits he has:

• Delivered training workshops to 250+ students on human-centred design, safety and security, participatory development practice, and working cross-culturally
• Mentored 70+ student engineers in applying their engineering skills to pro-social outcomes
• Co-ordinated summit logistics in challenging cross-cultural contexts
• Trained other facilitators in strength-based approaches
• Received consistently positive evaluations from participants, including feedback of being a “compassionate, passionate and empathetic facilitator.”

He has also co-designed and piloted the "Dialogues on Country", study tour for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal engineers and water professionals. Dialogues explored the connection between water, land and culture on country. It aimed to equip engineers with an understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems and what engineering on country and with Traditional Owners could be like.

--Training--

Ian has developed training in workshop settings on: development practive; motivation theory; water, sanitation, and hygiene.
