BIO
Biography
Dr Islam Md Rizwanul Fattah is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Civil, Environmental and Sociotechnical Engineering at UTS, working on the technologies that will power a net-zero future: renewable and low-carbon fuels, hydrogen and ammonia energy systems, catalysis, machine learning for energy systems, and life cycle assessment. Ranked among the top 1% of researchers worldwide as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (Cross-Field, 2022 and 2023), he combines an internationally leading publication record with hands-on delivery for industry partners and a growing research group.
Research Impact
Dr Fattah has published more than 160 peer-reviewed journal articles, cited more than 16,000 times (Google Scholar), with nine papers currently designated Web of Science Highly Cited Papers. He has appeared on the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists list for six consecutive years (2020 to 2025). His work reaches beyond the literature: eighteen patents held by companies including Unilever, Clariant and ENI cite his research as prior art, and his publications form part of the evidence base of policy documents issued by six government and intergovernmental bodies across six countries. He is Section Editor of the Elsevier major reference work Comprehensive Ammonia Research, editor of five academic books with a sixth commissioned by Elsevier for 2027, and an assessor for research funding agencies in four countries, including the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and Chile's ANID. As FEIT Chief Investigator on a funded feasibility study with Bundaberg Regional Council, he contributed the fuel-conversion pathway for microalgae-based wastewater treatment.
Join the Group: PhD and Research Opportunities
Dr Fattah leads a multidisciplinary group of PhD and MEngRes candidates tackling problems across the clean energy frontier, from underground hydrogen storage and machine-learning surrogate models for high-pressure hydrogen systems to advanced membranes for water treatment, biolubricants from waste feedstocks, and life cycle assessment of low-carbon fuels. His students publish early and often, with more than a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles produced during candidature across the cohort, including two in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews. Prospective candidates with interests in sustainable fuels, hydrogen and ammonia, catalysis, water treatment, or energy systems modelling are encouraged to get in touch.
Teaching
Dr Fattah coordinates 48641 Fluid Mechanics in the Spring session, where student satisfaction has risen strongly under his coordination, and co-developed 41385 Process Dynamics and Control.. His teaching embeds Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competencies and brings live research problems and industry-standard simulation tools into the classroom.
Partner With Us
Dr Fattah welcomes collaboration with industry, government, and research organisations on clean energy transition, sustainable fuels, hydrogen and ammonia, and environmental technology projects, from short consulting engagements to co-funded PhD projects and large collaborative bids.
