Professor Jane Sandall CBE is an NIHR Senior Investigator and a Chair of Social Science and Women’s Health with over 20 years of research in the area of safety and quality. She leads the Maternal Health Policy, Systems and Implementation Research Group in the Division of Women’s Health in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, King’s College, London.

She was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Health Sciences in 2014 by the University of Technology Sydney.

Professor Sandall has published widely and current grants at a total value £16.5 million. She was joint editor of a Sociology of Health and Illness Journal special issue on the Sociology of Patient Safety and is associate editor of Midwifery.

Her research draws on the clinical and social sciences and focuses on issues of quality and safety. Key themes include the impact of maternal health policy at a health system and service-delivery level, and on health outcomes and users’ experiences, and, the social and organisational implications of the translation of innovative health technologies into health care to improve safety. Her research findings have informed the UK government commission on Nursing and Midwifery, House of Commons Health Committee on Inequalities, and English, US, Brazilian, Irish and Australian reviews of maternity services.
