BIO

Jayan Kurian is a Lecturer and accomplished Information Systems researcher and developer with a deep passion for advancing technology that enhances human experiences in spatial computing, business process management, and digital transformation. His expertise spans mixed and virtual reality systems, with applications ranging from aged care and emergency management to contact sports and education. Jayan played a pivotal role in developing the institutional repository for Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, addressing critical challenges in scholarly article archiving.

 

During his tenure at both Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore, Jayan was integral to the DSpace Leadership group, mentoring projects funded by Google and the DSpace Foundation. He was invited to the Google Summer of Code Mentors' summit in California and received the eINDIA award for the best ICT enabled University of the year for his work on the SIP@IR Google Summer of Code project. 

 

Jayan holds professional certifications from leading technology providers including PegaSystems, Oracle, Microsoft, SUN Microsystems, Prosoft, and CompTIA. Recognized as a Subject Matter Expert by the Computing Technology Industry Association, he has also served as a Judge in the Singapore National Skills Competition. His research on communication patterns within Social Networking Sites of Emergency Management Organizations has been published in prestigious journals and conferences including Computer and Education, Online Information Review, and others.

 

His current projects focus on spatial computing, digital transformation in emergency management, and leveraging technology for health monitoring of chronic patients. Jayan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a certified Pega Business Architect, with a keen interest in business process reengineering and workflow management in digital government settings.

 

Jayan earned his M.Phil in Computer Science and Information Technology from the University of Nottingham, followed by a PhD from the University of Canberra in 2019. He joined the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) as a Lecturer in Information Systems in 2023. Outside academia, Jayan contributes to his community through volunteer work with the ACT State Emergency Services. Jayan's team was granted a $5,000 performance bonus due to their participation in the "CogDec" project under the ON Prime - CSIRO Program in June 2024. He is also serving as the President of the Special Interest Group on Education (SIGED) within the Association for Information Systems (AIS) for the 2026 term.
