TEACHING AND SUPERVISION
Dr. Karthick Thiyagarajan has over 7 years of successful teaching, subject coordination and supervising/co-supervising experience in a variety of mechatronics and robotics courses. His teaching philosophy strives to improve student learning experiences by combining cutting-edge online technology with hands-on, research-inspired studio-style classroom environments for learning. He introduced contemporary pedagogy concepts like flipped learning, activity-based learning, authentic learning, and research-inspired learning in the mechatronics and robotics subjects he teaches.
SUBJECT DEVELOPMENT: He developed a new subject at UTS called Robotics Studio 1. This studio-based course aims to help students evaluate, design, and apply cutting-edge techniques for sensing, perception, and estimation in robotic and mechatronic systems. The studio provides an environment in which students can effectively collaborate to develop a unique robotic solution. This subject not only focuses on the technical aspects of engineering design, but it also acts as a link between engineering science and practice. For example, it assists engineers in discovering relevant engineering research, pursuing those analyses, and then making the appropriate technical-level design decisions and recommendations.
SUPERVISION & TRAINING: Dr. Karthick actively supervises or co-supervises research degree students, undergraduate capstone project students, postgraduate students, research interns, and engineers. To date, he has supervised or co-supervised over 50 younger researchers, students, and professional engineers. It includes 8 PhDs, 1 Master's, 8 software and mechatronics research engineers, 14 interns, 20+ capstones, and 5 external higher degree research students. Over 35 of them were trained on industry projects to address real-world issues and research translation. His recently graduated Ph.D. student has won the Best Thesis Award from the IEEE Sensors Council NSW Chapter.
