Recently promoted to the position of Associate Professor in the School of Life Sciences within the Faculty of Science at the University of Technology Sydney, Kristine currently holds multiple leadership roles. As an educator, she coordinates the first-year core Science Subject – Cell Biology and Genetics and second year core Biotechnology Subject - Biotechnology. Additionally, she serves as the Program Director of the Biotechnology programs and holds the position of Chair of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at UTS. Kristine's diverse responsibilities underscore her commitment to academic excellence, program development, and institutional governance.
Kristine has completed a Bachelor of Science (Hons) majoring in Biochemistry at the University of Western Australia. She then moved to Sydney and completed her PhD study (“Molecular pathways of androgen action in the male cardiovascular system) under the supervision of Prof Alison Heather, Prof David Celermajer and Prof David Handelsman, at the University of Sydney. Kristine presented her PhD results at the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) and was awarded the prestigious CSANZ Ralph Reader Prize.
Her early postdoctoral work in Prof Kerry-Anne Rye research laboratory at the Heart Research Institute (Sydney) focused on characterizing the anti-inflammatory properties of high density lipoprotein (HDL). In 2011, she received a UTS Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship where she evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of HDL in suppressing inflammation that underlies diet-induced insulin resistance.
Kristine has a long standing in the field of cardiovascular and endocrinology research. Her research primarily focuses on finding therapeutic targets, investigating the inflammatory and oxidative stress molecular processes underlying the process of cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis, heart failure and preeclampsia. Her research uses a multidisciplinary approach employing molecular, cellular and whole animal analyses. In recent years, she has expanded her research purview to encompass the effects of air pollution on dementia and cardiovascular disease. Utilising cutting-edge 3D cell culture systems, she brings innovation to her investigations, showcasing a dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and contributing to impactful solutions in these critical areas. As the Program Director of the Biotechnology Program at UTS, Kristine plays a pivotal role in shaping the academic and research landscape, further solidifying her commitment to education and leadership in the scientific community.
