UTS statisticians have helped the publicly funded Australian Red Cross Blood Service analyse the impact of vein visualisation technology (VVT) on donation success and collection experience for blood donors. Their robust design of a randomised control trial and expert statistical analysis of the results confirmed that VVT does NOT improve the donation experience nor lead to better blood collection. As a result, the Red Cross Blood Service deferred investment in the technology for its 91 collection centres around Australia, saving the organisation and the taxpayer $364,000 in procurement costs, and up to $182,000 a year in ongoing training and maintenance.
