BIO
Central to my research program at UTS is forensic fire investigation, where I pioneer robust methodologies and deliver insights that elevate casework practices for justice outcomes. With expertise across forensic fire analysis, advanced imagery, and search methodologies, my work extends into extensive collaborations with industry partners—particularly Australian and international law enforcement agencies and fire and emergency services—to integrate scientific innovation with operational need.
My research group undertakes specialised work in fingermark fundamentals and development techniques. Drawing on proficiency developed during my own PhD, I supervise PhD candidates investigating surfactant chemistry for fingermark development, and enhancement methods for evidence recovery on scene and in the lab. This hands-on mentorship cultivates skilled researchers and supports translational forensic science of immediate relevance to the profession.
I also lead research in the validation of specialist search capabilities for law enforcement, focusing on strategies that enable agencies to detect and recover more concealed evidence during search warrants and operational deployments. Recognising this as an underutilised but highly effective approach, my work promotes best-practice adoption of validated methods, ensuring investigators have the tools to achieve enhanced evidentiary outcomes.
As an educator, I teach forensic imaging, advanced imaging, and specialist recovery, equipping students and professionals with skills in scientific photography, digital imaging analysis, and evidence recovery technologies. This teaching supports high standards of technical competency and investigative rigor within the forensic discipline.
Through collaborative research, student supervision, and industry knowledge exchange, I champion multidisciplinary progress in forensic science. I welcome dialogue and partnership across academia, government, and industry, with our shared goal to deliver innovative research and improve public safety through proven forensic practices.
