IMPACT SUMMARY
Professor Murphy's research has generated measurable impact on emergency care policy, clinical practice, workforce development, and patient outcomes across local, national, and international settings.
Her most influential contribution is the co-design and implementation of HIRAID®, the world's first evidence-based emergency nursing assessment framework. HIRAID® has transformed nursing assessment practices, improved patient safety, enhanced recognition of deterioration, strengthened clinical decision-making, and informed emergency nursing education at scale. The framework has been implemented in more than 170 emergency departments and has influenced emergency nursing practice nationally and internationally.
Her PhD research was among the first globally to demonstrate a direct relationship between multidisciplinary trauma team training and improved patient outcomes, providing new evidence for trauma education and team performance. This work has informed approaches to trauma team training, implementation, and workforce development both within Australia and internationally.
Beyond individual programs of research, Professor Murphy has played a significant role in shaping emergency care policy and health system reform through leadership positions with NSW Health, statewide emergency care initiatives, and multidisciplinary research collaborations. Her work continues to influence contemporary priorities in emergency care, including patient deterioration, behavioural emergencies, implementation science, workforce wellbeing, and emergency department performance.
Through a career grounded in clinical practice, Professor Murphy has developed a distinctive approach to research that focuses on solving real-world healthcare challenges. Her work demonstrates how clinician-led research can drive sustainable improvements in patient safety, quality of care, workforce capability, and health system performance.
