A/ProfMary Coupland

Dr Mary Coupland retired from UTS on June 6, 2025. Prior to that, as a member of the discipline of Mathematics in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Faculty of Science, she lectured first year mathematics subjects and enjoyed inspiring future scientists and engineers to be successful in using mathematics. She also taught quantitative literacy in the undergraduate subject "Arguments, Evidence and Intuition", an elective for all UTS students. Teams led by Dr Coupland have won teaching citations and awards, and she has been awarded a personal citation for excellence in teaching mathematics at UTS.

Dr Coupland is passionate about encouraging teachers to contribute to their profession and she is an honorary life member of the Mathematical Association of New South Wales, the state professional association for teachers of mathematics at all levels. She held a two year voluntary appointment as President of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers. (2014 – May 2016). For her work with Professional Teachers associations she was awarded the Outstanding Professional Service Award by the Professional Teachers Council, NSW, in 2012 and the Exceptional Service Award in 2020. Dr Coupland is also a member of the professional body for mathematicians, the Australian Mathematical Society.

As a consultant, she contributes to syllabus and examination development for the NSW Office of the Board of Studies, and has been an advisor to the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority regarding the Australian Curriculum.
