BIO

Matthew Phillips is an Emeritus Professor of Applied Physics in the Faculty of Science. His research interests are predominantly in materials physics, focusing mainly on: wide band gap oxide and nitride semiconductors and devices, light emission in quantum nanostructures, the physics of point defects in semiconductors as well as advanced nano-characterisation techniques, in particular scanning cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. Professor Phillips has co-supervised 30 PhD and 3 MSc thesis completions, given 75 invited talks and seminars in 17 different countries, and has published over 300 peer reviewed papers. He has been a Chief Investigator on 13 Australian Research Council (ARC) research project grants as well as 20 ARC research Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) grants. Professor Phillips established joint Co-tutelle doctoral degree programs by research involving UTS with the Technische Universität Berlin (Institute of Solid State Physics) and Mahidol University in Bangkok. Professor Phillips was a member of the International Advisory Board for the Thai National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) from 2014 to 2016.
