DrMichael Behrens

Dr Michael Behrens is currently leading Mechanical and Mechatronic focussed commerical research projects with UTS Rapido including the development of a large format additive manufacturing system for mineral processing equipment from concept to commercial deployment, physics modelling and proof-of-concept modelling for innovative conveyor systems, material and product testing for assistive devices and topology optimisation for additively manufactured shoulder reconstruction implants.

UTS Rapido is a University-embedded innovation unit that works with internal and external partners to unlock access to world-leading technology expertise and develop cutting-edge products and services in order to generate real business and community impact. UTS Rapido is based in the Faculty of Engineering and IT at UTS, and works closely with partners; taking industry ideas and concepts all the way from research through to prototypes and then real-world solutions.

Prior to joining Rapido, he was a member of the UTS Centre for Autonomous Systems and designed and built numerous prototype systems, including a step climbing attachment for powered wheelchairs, smart patient hoist and walking frames, systems for monitoring customer movement on train stations and an inspection robot to assess the condition of critical water mains which received numerous awards including the Vice-Chancellors Award for Research Excellence through Collaboration, Australian Water Association's National Research Innovation award and the International Water Association's Project Innovation Award.
