Culture Matters to Mathematics Teaching and Learning: Research Studies in Honor of Professor Frederick K. S. Leung
    1 May 2025
In honor of Chair Professor Frederick K. S. Leung’s (Hans Freudenthal Medallist 2013 and President of ICMI 2021-2024) decades as one of the pioneers in investigating the cultural differences in mathematics education and establishing a framework for the relationship between cultures and mathematics educations, it is only fitting that we create a book to acknowledge his many contributions to the field and to showcase promising research advancements that sparked directly or indirectly from his intellectual contributions to different mathematics educators globally. The subject of the book focuses on the research areas that have benefited from Professor Leung’s intellectual contributions and influence from his cultural perspectives on mathematics education. Themes include: (1) Initial teacher education programs; (2) Inservice professional development; (3) Mathematics curriculum and textbooks; (4) Mathematics instructional practices/classroom research; (5) Assessments; (6) Affective factors (beliefs, attitudes). Multiple Research methods are used to explore how different cultures influence mathematics education. The research methods include quantitative approach (such as structured equation modelling, exploratory factor analysis and confirmation factor analysis), qualitative approach, case study and meta-analysis of literature review. This book not only informs readers of a more in-depth knowledge of the influence of culture on mathematics education but also a wider horizon in the position of cultural factors in investigating teacher education, teacher professional training and school student learning in different cultural contexts. Ultimately, both the understanding and knowledge of how the culture influence mathematics education, and the research methods employed to research these areas can be enhanced through studying this proposed book.
