BIO
Dr Paul Williams is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and a member of the Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration (CAAV) at the University of Technology Sydney. Their research area is noise and vibration control, typically focussing upon reducing noise within engine exhausts, HVAC ducts, utility pipes and tunnels. They were awarded their PhD by Brunel University London in 2015 in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Dr Williams has been a chief investigator on multiple industry projects. For example, an ACARP project (C34301), on the subject of "Reducing noise emitted by heavy vehicles in open cut coal mines". He was recently awarded a highly competitive National Intelligence Postdoctoral Grant in the field of vibroacoustics.
Dr Williams joined UTS in 2019 following six years of industrial experience developing acoustic silencers for ducted HVAC and gas turbine generator intake and exhaust systems. He registered as a Chartered Engineer through the Institute of Acoustics in 2019 and is a named inventor on one patent describing a hybrid dissipative-reactive silencer for large, high temperature exhausts (US10458589B2). Dr Williams has actively collaborated with industry partners on a series of research and consultancy projects and has experience applying industry standards such as ISO 7235, ISO 3745, ISO 10140 and GB/T 23137-2020.
A selection of projects completed alongside industry partners include:
- A hybrid dissipative-reactive silencer developed for gas turbine exhausts. See, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apacoust.2017.10.018.
- A C-class locomotive exhaust silencer design to meet modern EPA standards. See, http://hdl.handle.net/10453/158354.

- Prediction of a hydrofoil's vibration due to flow-induced noise. See, https://doi.org/10.1121/10.0022771.
- Acoustic louvre design with application to large mining vehicles (ACARP C34301).
- Application of GB/T 23137-2020 to measure the emitted sound pressure level of water heaters.
- Application of ISO 3745:2012 to measure the breakout sound power and pressure level of HVAC units.
