It is a comprehensive resource for those who wish to further their engagement with fashion as a contemporary phenomenon. This book connects a diverse range of approaches and incorporates non-Western literature within better known studies on Europe and North America. It identifies the history of fashion as a meeting point between the long-standing historical investigation of dress and costume and the more recent development of those sociological and anthropological inspired studies that have come to be called fashion history. The Fashion History Reader is composed of significant essays that have influenced scholarship in the history of dress and fashion over the last generation. Twenty-three chapters and forty-four shorter pieces (snapshots) cover a variety of topics and approaches within the history of fashion, ranging from object-based studies to theory driven analyses, and are authored by leading academics, curators and fashion specialists. The new snapshots function in this text as talking points for discussion and debate. We hope that this book will be of use to undergraduate and postgraduate students of fashion and dress history, as well as researchers and museum professionals working in the field. The Fashion History Reader presents readers with the tools to understand significant fashion trends and phenomena, present and past, as well as the shifts in the scholarship of dress that enable new perspectives and questions to be posed.
