TEACHING AND SUPERVISION
For the Masters of Physiotherapy degree, I teach Sub-acute Rehabilitation (96084), Professional Practice (96081) and supervise project groups in Research design in Physiotherapy (96086) and Research Project (96092). I supervise, and have previously supervised, numerous Masters and PhD students.
For the coursework-based courses I coordinate - I act as a facilitator. As a facilitator I encourage student participation, to ensure fun, interactive and informative classes. I believe that it is important that students learn from each other (when possible) - Many minds are more powerful than one (especially mine!). Student experiences far surpass my experiences and as such, I continually call on student input through class discussions and activities, utilising flipped, inquiry-based and practice-oriented learning. Not only does this make classes more interesting but it also provides diverse views and opinions, likely representative of the patients we treat. I would like students to become life-long self-directed learners, willing to change, modify, assess and reassess practice to become better clinicians. I like students to be open and utilise informal and formal feedback to shape, adjust and improve classes, creating the most relevant learning experience for students.
For the research-based students I supervise - I provide guidance, a lot at first, that gradually reduces as students develop their own research capabilities and ideas. In my eyes, students are research collaborators – With research being a collaborative effort between supervisor and student. I enjoy the fresh research ideas that students bring, and also enjoy maturing these ideas through discussion and investigation, to develop a clear research direction in areas that will shape practice with (hopefully) widespread societal implications.
