Our research is helping to change the public narrative of institutionalisation by positioning it as an important aspect of Australian history that must be recognised and redressed and which provides important lessons that can shape contemporary disability service provision and community inclusion. Our research is also challenging conventional approaches to redevelopment and reuse of former institution sites in ways that erase, deny or sensationalise the institutional past by establishing an evidence base for centering voices of people with intellectual disability, and disability social history and lived experiences of institutionalisation. By providing insights for disability policymakers and service providers on not repeating unjust practices of institutionalisation we aim to bring benefit to people with intellectual disability.
