Rafael has published over 160 articles in leading medical and rehabilitation journals. Since 2022, he has been recognized in Stanford University's ranking of the world’s top 2% most influential scientists. His research includes seven clinical trials and 30 evidence syntheses, contributing to high-quality evidence that has informed clinical guidelines, such as those from NICE (England), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense, and AIM Specialty Health.

His work has gained national and international media attention, including features in news outlets and podcasts. In Brazil, Rafael led knowledge translation projects aimed at bridging the gap between research and community care. These initiatives included free evidence-based treatment programs for adults and older people with back pain in primary healthcare settings and an online education course to update clinicians on the latest evidence for managing low back pain.
