Rusty is passionate about solving sustainability challenges. Rusty has contributed to a wide range of research topics, including:

• Workforce strategy, skills analysis, and jobs modelling in renewable energy and supply chains for RACE, Department of Education, Infrastructure Australia, Energy Efficiency Council, NSW Government

• Supply chain analysis and material flow modelling for renewable energy technologies, particularly batteries, for the Battery Stewardship Council, NSW Government and Department of Education

• Mapping sustainable and responsible supply chain enablers like life cycle assessment, sustainability standards and certifications for the Future Battery Industries CRC.

• Social and environmental impact assessment for Sydney Water, the National Parks Association of Australia, and WAP.

Rusty’s research interests lie in sustainable and responsible supply chains (batteries, renewables, and transport); circular economy (reuse and repair); and jobs, skills and workforce strategies in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Rusty applies a combination of both bottom up and top down techniques to analyse a range of sustainability challenges and has technical experience in quantitative analysis techniques (workforce and skills modelling, social and environmental footprinting and input output analysis, material flow analysis, surveys, data analysis and Life Cycle Assessment) and qualitative analysis methods (interviews, content analysis, capacity assessment and workshop facilitated visioning). Rusty is experienced in disseminating technical information to a non-technical audience and strives for accessible science communication.
