BIO

Sara Oscar is a practice-based researcher, artist, and curator working with photography, moving image, and generative AI. Her practice and scholarship examine the epistemic and cultural implications of AI-generated imaging within a broader historical framework of photography and technologies of visual representation, with a particular focus on memory, the archive, and the politics of the image.

Oscar was the lead Chief Investigator of Filmic Identities in the Age of Deepfakes, a cross-faculty research grant between researchers in the School of Design and the Faculty of Engineering at UTS. She has guest edited a special issue of Photographies on photography and memory in the age of AI forthcoming in March 2026, and her work is the subject of a conversation with Andrew Fisher in the February 2026 issue of Philosophy of Photography. She has presented her research nationally and internationally, including a public lecture at the Taking Stock Symposium at the University of Melbourne and in the Waste and Justice lecture series at Parsons School of Art and Design, New York. She supervises PhD students in photography and media.

Recent exhibitions include A Gestural Drift, curated for Artbank, and execute_photography at RMIT Gallery. Her solo exhibition From Here to Eternity was presented at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne. Oscar's work is held in the collections of Artbank and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. She is the recipient of the John and Margaret Baker Fellowship, National Photography Prize, 2022.

Oscar writes widely for public audiences. Her articles on AI, photography, and visual culture appear regularly in The Conversation, and her scholarly work has been published in Journal of Visual Art Practice, Philosophy of Photography, and Photographies.
