IMPACT SUMMARY

  • Fertiliser drawn forward osmosis process for fertigation - pilot demonstration for the tretament of a coalmining wastewater at a remote coal mining site in NSW for turf grass fertigation
  •   Valorization of human urine to produce a sustainable liquid fertiliser: transforming waste into valuable resource contributing to resource conservation and circular economy. UTS research translation award (2nd prize winner 2025)
  • Pilot-scale demonstration of an improved on-site sanitation system in Bhutan using shredded waste plastic bottles as biofilter media (in collaboration with the College of Science and Technology of the Royal University of Bhutan and Project was funded by Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation)
  • Off-grid solar powered Pilot-scale demonstration of a Capacitive Desionsation Desalination to reduce salinity of seawater reverse osmosis desalinated water in place of second pass reverse omsosis.

NiCE Greentech is a newly established spin‑off startup company that has been licensed by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to treat source‑separated urine generated at UTS Building 11. The company was established in mid‑2025 to support the translation and commercialisation of nutrient recovery technologies developed at UTS.

The membrane hybrid system efficiently transforms liquid waste from anaerobic digesters (municipal and cattle farm wastewater treatment plants) into a valuable bio stimulant fertilizer called StimGro. This technology uses a combination of membrane bioreactors (MBR) to effectively produce a nutrient-rich bio stimulant for healthy plant growth. The system was trailed initially to convert human urine into fertilizer, supporting a circular economy approach. This project expands the application of this technology for the treatment of wastewater containing high ammonia concentrations such as liquid anaerobic digestate generated from various sources including municipal wastewater treatment plants, cattle farm wastewater treatment plants, agriculture food processing plants, etc. and convert into a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer containing bio stimulant that enhances plant health and its growth. We have named this product StimGro for later trademark. The potential applications of the StimGro include all ornamental plants and flowers, vegetables and food crops both in hydroponic and land-based applications. This project was a second winner of the UTS Research Translation Award 2025 with a prize money of $25,000.
