Dr Siobhan Irving is a medical anthropologist, teacher, unionist and social justice advocate. Coming from a working class migrant background, Siobhan brings her lived experience of navigating many intersecting social margins to her teaching, research and advocacy work.

Prior to her role at UTS, Siobhan taught and coordinated subjects as a sessional academic and campaigned vigorously for the rights of precariously employed staff through the National Tertiary Education Union. Before academia, Siobhan worked in community healthcare and spent a lot less time sitting down!

Siobhan currently balances teaching and research with serving as an executive committee member of Sydney Queer Muslims, where she volunteers as both the non-profit group’s treasurer academic advisor. She uses her research experience to assist in developing outreach programs and activities to help the group better support LGBTQ+ Muslims. Her current research focuses on improving the accessibility of mental healthcare and other supportive services for young Muslims in both Singapore and Sydney, Australia.


In her spare time, Siobhan also volunteers as a wildlife carer for WIRES and is qualified to rescue and rehabilitate native wildlife such as birds, small mammals and snakes.

Siobhan is available for PhD, Master of Arts, and Honours supervision.
