BIO
A/Prof. Steve Ling received his PhD in Electronic and Information Engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2007 and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He is the Head of the AIVision Nexus Laboratory, leading research in artificial intelligence, medical imaging, and biomedical instrumentation.
A/Prof. Ling has published over 260 research papers, including more than 115 papers in leading international journals. His research focuses on developing innovative and trustworthy AI solutions for real-world healthcare and engineering applications. His pioneering work on non-invasive blood glucose monitoring using advanced AI techniques has been widely published in top biomedical journals and has contributed significantly to the field of digital health.
More recently, he has led several large-scale medical imaging projects involving ultrasound image analysis, automated image quality assessment, feature detection, and generative AI for clinical image enhancement and reconstruction. He is currently leading the development of next-generation Clinical Foundation Models for Echocardiography in collaboration with international clinical and industry partners. This research aims to leverage large-scale multimodal echocardiography data to develop foundation models capable of supporting automated image interpretation, quality assessment, clinical report generation, disease detection, and decision support. The project seeks to establish trustworthy and clinically deployable AI systems that can improve diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency, and accessibility of cardiac ultrasound services.
Through strong collaborations with international universities, hospitals, and industry partners, A/Prof. Ling has successfully secured more than 10 competitive research grants and industry-funded projects. He currently supervises over 10 PhD students and continues to drive translational AI research that bridges cutting-edge technology with real-world clinical and industrial impact.
Currently, he serves as Associate Editor for IET Electronics Letters , Sensors, IEEE Access, and CAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology. Besides, He is active in international society. He has been a senior member of IEEE since 2012. In addition, He has been a reviewer of some international journals (e.g. IEEE Transactions), conferences and grant proposals. He also acted as session chair and organizer in several international conferences. Since 2012, he served as Lead guest editor for many Q1 journals.
In 2024, he awarded FEIT Early/Mid-Career Educator of the Year.
In 2025, he was named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University.
