BIO
I am Dr Thiago Mathias, a computational scientist and speech-language pathologist trained in Brazil, whose work operates at the intersection of sensory neuroscience, mathematical and computational modelling, vibroacoustics, environmental health, and neurological rehabilitation. My academic trajectory is defined by the rigorous integration of fundamental science, engineering-based modelling, and translational clinical application. I investigate how biological sensory systems encode, process, adapt to, and become vulnerable under complex environmental exposures, particularly environmental noise. My research combines physics-informed modelling, multiscale simulation, signal processing, and neurocomputational frameworks to understand structure-function relationships within auditory and mechanosensory systems. I hold a PhD in Science and am currently undertaking postdoctoral research in Environmental Management, where I develop multiscale computational models applied to cochlear biomechanics and bio-inspired mechanosensory systems. My work integrates ODE/PDE-based simulations, vibroacoustic system modelling, and mechanical-neural coupling approaches to quantify exposureresponse dynamics and sensory vulnerability. I am the developer of the Environmental Auditory Risk Index (EARI), a computational biomarker that translates environmental acoustic exposure into biologically meaningful auditory risk metrics. The EARI integrates cochlear biomechanics, vibroacoustics, and neurocomputational modelling to establish quantitative links between environmental noise parameters and predicted system-level vulnerability. This framework contributes to forensic acoustics, public health modelling, and sustainability-oriented environmental management. My research output includes peer-reviewed journal publications, structured methodological frameworks, and international conference presentations in acoustics, vibration science, sensory modelling, and neuroengineering. I currently serve as an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow at the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, School of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, Centre for Audio, Acoustics and Vibration (CAAV), at the University of Technology Sydney. In this role, I collaborate on interdisciplinary projects involving bioacoustics, vibroacoustics, biomechanics, and neurocomputation across human and non-human sensory systems, consolidating my scientific positioning at the convergence of engineering, sensory biology, and sustainability science. Parallel to my academic career, I am the founder and director of Dr Thiago Mathias Speech Neuroscience Clinic, where I apply a systems-based and evidence-driven approach to neurological rehabilitation. My clinical practice integrates functional assessment, neurodevelopmental principles, computational reasoning, and data-informed decision-making, translating advanced scientific frameworks into structured therapeutic intervention. This dual academic-clinical engagement underpins my identity as a researcher-clinician, grounded equally in theoretical innovation and real-world application. In addition to my scientific training, I am a musician and cellist, a background that informs my refined auditory perception, acoustic sensitivity, and intuitive understanding of sound-related phenomena. I work professionally in Portuguese, English, and Chinese, and I am currently studying German.
