BIO
Castiel Zhang is part of UTS Rapido, an applied R&D innovation hub that partners with industry, government and academia to solve real-world engineering and technology challenges. Rapido brings together a team of commercially focused professionals working across software engineering, UX and digital, mechatronics, and research translation. The team also helps partners navigate the wider UTS innovation ecosystem, working alongside them to access facilities and academic expertise. UTS Rapido operates as a delivery-focused team that understands commercial outcomes, helping organisations move from idea to impact for industry and social good.
Beyond core development, Castiel has contributed to applied R&D initiatives for industry partners under the CRC-P program, including secure data-erasure engineering across multi-vendor hardware, and has worked on AI-driven data intelligence platforms in research-oriented environments. He works primarily across full-stack development, building tools with TypeScript, React and Electron, alongside Salesforce engineering (Flows, Apex, Lightning Web Components) that underpins UTS's CRM infrastructure for research grants and project management. He enjoys the mix of hands-on engineering and translating research outcomes into practical, deployable tools. Industry partnerships have included WV Technologies, Navantia and Viden. Research translation projects with UTS academics include the misinformation detection dashboard developed with Marian-Andrei Rizoiu, Associate Professor at the UTS Data Science Institute and Director of the Defence Innovation Network.
Castiel holds a Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours) from the University of Technology Sydney.
What he brings to a project
Castiel moves comfortably between front-end and back-end work, picks up unfamiliar platforms quickly (he taught himself Salesforce administration on the job), and is equally at home shipping a polished UI as he is untangling CRM data integrity issues behind the scenes. He pays close attention to UX/UI, refining interfaces to feel intuitive rather than just functional, whether that's an internal tool or a partner-facing application. His work combines software engineering with applied research, turning proof-of-concept ideas into commercially ready solutions, deployed by both academic and industry partners.
