BIO

Andrew is a lecturer in Organic Chemistry in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He is an early career chemical biologist carrying out cutting edge research in chemistry at the interface with biology.

Andrew joined UTS at the start of 2025 having spent 5.5 years working in the UK with Prof. Ben Davis, firstly at the University of Oxford and then at the Rosalind Franklin Institute. Here, Andrew worked at the cutting edge of chemical biology, using fundamental organic chemistry principles to unpick mechanism in biological systems. He had a specific focus on developing late stage methods for protein functionalisation (with applications in PTM discovery, and radiolabelling) as well as understanding the fundamental mechanisms behind the biosynthesis of protein N-glycosylation. Prior to this, Andrew completed his PhD in organic chemistry with Prof. Richard Payne at the University of Sydney where he focussed on the total synthesis of peptide natural products with antimicrobial activity.

Andrew's research will focus on the development of novel chemical tools to probe and modulate biological systems applied to therapeutics and drug discovery. Specifically, this will involve new methods for protein modification and the synthesis of antibiotic leads inspired by natural products.
