BIO
Bethany Wootton is a Clinical Psychologist and Professor in Clinical Psychology in the Graduate School of Health at UTS.
Growing up she lived in multiple rural towns which gave her the motivation to find novel ways to make evidence-based treatment accessible to all.
“No matter where you live you should be able to access the best possible care,” Bethany said.
“Currently, it can be difficult to access evidence-based treatments for mental health conditions.”
Starting with a placement while she was doing her own clinical training, she developed an interest in anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.
“We have very effective treatments for anxiety and related disorders using cognitive behavioural therapy. The key is to disseminate them in the most accessible and cost effective way.”
Her research has looked at developing treatment programs that reduce barriers to accessing cognitive behavioural therapy.
She has developed internet delivered treatment programs and looked at sequencing care at a more accelerated rate – delivering treatment up to three times a week.
She is supervising PhD students who are looking at the efficacy of video-conferencing delivered cognitive-behavioural therapy for various anxiety disorders, which became standard with the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There are lots of barriers to accessing cognitive-behavioural therapy in the community. It’s important to think about ways to overcome them using novel methods,” she said.
Bethany is an experienced teacher in the Master of Clinical Psychology program and prides herself on using experiential methods to deliver high-quality training.
Bethany graduated with a Bachelor of Arts; Graduate Diploma in Science (Psychology); Master of Psychology (Clinical); and PhD (Psychology). Bethany also completed a postdoctoral residency in clinical psychology at the Anxiety Disorders Center, Hartford Hospital, USA. She joined UTS in 2017.
She is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Clinical Psychology.
