BIO

Associate Professor Catherine Gorrie is Head of the Neural Injury Research Unit in the Faculty of Science at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). She is a neuroscience researcher with a strong focus on traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury, using clinically relevant animal models to investigate mechanisms of damage, repair, and regeneration in both infant and adult central nervous systems. Her current research programs examine endogenous neural progenitor cells, paediatric and compression spinal cord injury, and strategies to manipulate axonal responses for acute and chronic repair.

Associate Professor Gorrie completed her PhD in Neuroscience at UNSW in 2006 and joined UTS in 2011, where she has made sustained contributions across research, teaching, and academic leadership. Her disciplinary expertise includes histology and immunohistochemistry, and she has established productive national and international research collaborations with partners at Auckland University, Griffith University, Macquarie University, and UNSW.

She is also a highly regarded biomedical science educator and academic leader in Learning and Teaching. Associate Professor Gorrie has led whole‑of‑course curriculum design and assessment reform, integrating authentic assessment, work‑integrated learning, and case‑based approaches aligned with industry and professional practice. She has played a key role in the development of innovative laboratory teaching spaces, postgraduate course design addressing workforce needs, and the mentoring of academics across career stages. Her teaching philosophy is student‑centred and evidence‑informed, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity, belonging, and preparing graduates for complex scientific and professional environments.
