BIO
Dr Elyse Methven is a Senior Lecturer in Law. She has expertise in criminal law and the interdisciplinary field of law and language. Elyse was admitted as a Solicitor to the Supreme Court of NSW in 2009. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours), a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (UTS) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Law).
Elyse teaches Criminal Law and Procedure, Advanced Criminal Law and Criminal Sentencing Law. In 2021, Elyse was awarded the Learning and Teaching Award for Learning.Futures for engaging students in active learning that develops justice-oriented professionals.
Elyse joined UTS Law Faculty in 2011 as an inaugural Quentin Bryce Doctoral Scholar and teaching fellow. Elyse completed her PhD titled "Dirty talk: A critical discourse analysis of offensive language crimes" in 2017, which explored the representation of offensive language crimes through criminal justice discourse. Prior to commencing her doctoral research, Elyse was a solicitor at the NSW Crime Commission where she practised in the criminal investigations and confiscations divisions. She now volunteers in the police accountability clinic at Redfern Legal Centre.
Elyse's current research projects are on offensive language and penalty notice regimes. In 2018, Elyse was awarded a UTS early career research grant for a project on police discretion for public order offences titled "Swift Justice? Police discretion and on-the-spot fines for offensive language." She is currently working on a Faculty-funded project on Covid-19 fines for kids, in partnership with the community legal sector, UNSW and the University of Wollongong.
