Summary

Our social and political spheres are deeply interconnected, shaping contemporary societies, institutions and global systems. The Social and Political Sciences (SPS) Discipline in the School of Communication of Social Sciences brings together expertise in social, cultural and communication theory and practice to examine the interpersonal, community, economic and global forces that drive social change.

SPS is home to internationally recognised and award-winning researchers and teachers, with current and historical strengths in:

  • Climate change and sustainability
  • Public history
  • Race, cultural inclusion and migration
  • Asia-Pacific politics, governance and society.

Our team of 15 academics and four UTS Chancellor’s Research Fellows deliver the Social and Political Sciences Bachelor of Communication (B Comm SPS) program, and teach extensively into the B Comm Core and electives suite of subjects.

The undergraduate SPS program provides specialised skills in social science research and analysis, critical thinking, communication studies, and policy studies. We have an emphasis on social justice, global political and cultural contexts, and global economies, as well as delivering integrated 100-hour capstone industry placements to all students. In 2026 we located and placed 166 students in high-quality supervised industry research projects.
