BIO

Dr Johnny Kwok-Wai Wong is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Director of the UTS Postgraduate Construction Management Programs (Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Construction Management).

His research sits at the intersection of construction informatics and automation, with a strong focus on harnessing digital technologies to improve the productivity, sustainability, and performance of the construction industry. His research explores the application of computer vision, image processing, digital twins, and artificial intelligence (AI) in both offsite prefabrication and onsite construction processes. His work also encompasses research on brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for real-time robotic control, as well as advanced signal processing and predictive maintenance applications, including intelligent HVAC fault detection for smarter and more sustainable facility management.

Dr Wong has published more than 100 scholarly works, and his research has attracted competitive government and industry research funding from both Australia and overseas. He works closely with industry and academic partners across Australia and around the world to develop practical and impactful solutions for the built environment. In 2018, he co-founded the UTS BIM Research Lab. Since 2021, he has been recognised among Stanford University's World's Top 2% Scientists for five consecutive years. He serves on the editorial boards of several leading international journals, including Smart and Sustainable Built Environment, Construction Innovation, Intelligent Buildings International, and Buildings, and regularly contributes as an assessor for national and international research funding schemes.

Dr Wong holds a Bachelor of Building Construction Management with First Class Honours and a Master's degree from the University of New South Wales. After completing his PhD in 2007, he received the Best Dissertation Award from the CIB Student Chapter (Hong Kong SAR). Before joining academia, Dr Wong worked as a Project Quantity Surveyor on major construction and infrastructure projects across Australia, Hong Kong SAR, and the United Kingdom. He is a Chartered Surveyor, a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS), an APC Assessor, and currently serves on the RICS NSW Member Engagement Group.
