BIO
Robin Bowley teaches and researches in the fields of Corporate Law and Insurance Law.
He also teaches electives in related subject areas including Advanced Contracts, Personal Injury Law in Practice and Work Health and Safety Law.
After a brief stint in the Royal Australian Navy, Robin qualified as a solicitor and worked for six years with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, where he was involved in numerous investigations into possible breaches of corporate and financial services laws. He draws upon this experience to bring a highly practical approach to his teaching and research.
Robin’s teaching in the above areas has been recognised - in 2019 with a Vice Chancellor’s Teaching and Learning Citation, and in 2020 with the UTS Law Faculty’s Lyndal Taylor Teaching Award.
His postgraduate qualifications include a Master of Laws from the University of Sydney and a PhD from the University of Wollongong. Robin’s PhD thesis, which evaluated international legal responses to the risk of maritime terrorism, was ranked second out of 14 dissertations internationally in the 2014 “Best PhD Thesis in the Field of Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Studies”, conducted annually by the Terrorism Research Initiative.
In 2023 he published his updated research in this field in two books with Routledge – with the first book focusing on measures to prevent attacks on ships, and the second book focusing on preventing the maritime facilitation of terrorism.
He is currently undertaking a number of research projects comparing approaches to insurance regulation across common law jurisdictions.
Robin is actively involved in several industry bodies, including the Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA). In 2023, Robin was the recipient of AILA’s Insurance Law Prize, which is awarded annually to a person who has made a substantial contribution to the field of insurance law.
He is a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia and of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance.
